Metal Railings Measuring Guide

Unless stated otherwise in the drop-down menu of the product pages, our metal garden railings are available as standard to "fit an opening" of 1830mm (6ft). Any irregular sizes remaining can be taken up using a made-to-measure lengths. In most instances, this means that measuring is easy.

Installing Railings Between Brick Pillars

  1. Measure the gap between the brick pillars.

  2. If the span is wider than the "fits opening" dimension shown on the product page, you need to include a bolt-down post to join the panels together.

  3. Alternatively you will need a made to measure size.

Essential Information and Practical Advice

  • Due to manufacturing limitations, the maximum width made to measure size we can offer as a single railing will "fit an opening" of 2743mm.

  • The "fits opening" measurements already include the surface-mounted fitting brackets. You do not need to make additional calculations for these elements.

  • When using bolt-down posts, you must use appropriate bolts to mount the posts onto the wall. These are not included, so you will need to purchase these elsewhere.

  • The wall must be sufficient in size to fully support the width of the bolt-down plate welded to the bottom of the post.

  • Many of our metal post options have a universal design. The fixing holes for the brackets are not pre-drilled. You will need to drill pilot holes for the brackets and should only use self-tapping screws to attach the mounting brackets.

  • For railings advertised as "physical height", we have not considered ground clearance.

  • For railings advertised as "height once installed", we have already included 50mm (2") for ground clearance. This measurement is from the brickwork surface to the top of the horizontal framework. We do not include the scrollwork or finials located above this point.

  • If you have overhanging brickwork on the pillars, ensure enough room for the railing to avoid colliding.

  • You must fit metal posts at each end of the railngs if no end support (such as brick pillars) are available.
